Review: Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019)
Sometimes it’s difficult to write a review for a movie that you believe to be absolutely perfect and the definition of pure cinema. It becomes less a review and more of a rave, although reviews in general run the gamut from rant to rave. Celine Sciamma’s masterpiece — a word I use very rarely — is one such film that deserves all the praise it has been given, and more.
Review: For Sama (2019)
For Sama is a tremendous achievement. Filmed and directed by journalist Waad al-Kateab, this powerful, haunting, and real documentary is an intimate look at the female experience of War — in particular, a young mother’s experience in the former bustling town of Aleppo.
Review: Parasite (2019)
It is hard to describe the film Parasite to those who have not seen it, and I am glad that people have kept the twists secretive. The less you know about it, the better.
Review: Avengers: Endgame (2019)
What Kevin Feige and the folks and Marvel have done is unparalleled, and we may never again see the likes of what they have accomplished since the introduction of Robert Downey, Jr.’s Iron Man in 2008. The conclusion to Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe does not disappoint, and uses every single minute of its three-hour runtime wisely, not wasting any beats or character interactions.
Review: Black Panther
It’s unfortunate it took so long to make a superhero film with a black lead, but I’m glad Ryan Coogler was the one to shepherd it. Chadwick Bozeman is solid in the lead role, but it doesn’t take much for female characters like Danai Gurira’s Okoye to outshine him in some scenes – and that’s okay.
Review: Roma (2018)
Roma is a perfectly made film, in my eyes. And it’s difficult to explain how it affects the viewer, as the experience is different for everyone. But it’s clear that Alfonso Cuaron out his heart and soul into this movie that is based on the nanny from his childhood. Newcomer Yalitza Aparicio is a revelation, and a natural.
